Brookhaven Symphonic Poetry
Monday, March 28, 2011 at 1:40AM I do a lot of things with production. I make audiobooks (like the Sanguo Yanyi). I make Podcasts (not so much recently, though I have done quite a few in the past). I make fake commercials (like the Underwriting Grants that are posted in another section of the Promos and Production page). I make remixes. I make songs which sometimes sound almost like hip-hop (though I'm a self-trained novice at it). But sometimes, I do songs which aren't really songs, per se, in that they don't have anything that could be called a "hook", which is kinda a basic part of the structure of a song.
Euterpe, the Muse of Music and Lyric Poetry. Whose image is more fitting to adorn this page?
So I call it poetry instead. I suppose the term fits as well as any other. It IS poetry. It just happens to have a musical bed behind it. Now, I'm a huge, huge fan of orchestral music. Huge fan. By far, classical is probably my favorite genre. There's something about Symphony, that it can say fully what no other genre really can...
Put poetry and symphony together, and you've got Symphonic Poetry. I'm sure I didn't invent the concept, but I'm posting some stuff here to Represent, I guess.
If you've at all listened to any of my other production, you might have gotten an idea by now that I don't think like other people do, and my production is different than the same ol' lameass bullplop that passes for big name media these days. Oh, don't get me wrong, there's some cool records out there. There's a few shining heroes still kicking it in the Hip-Hop game. Immortal Technique, Paris, Chuck D, Dead Prez, etc. They're legends on the Mic, and I'll give 'em that.
But a lot of this crap you hear these days? Songs about getting laid, doing drugs, drinking, partying, covering one's teeth in "ice" and dying at 23 of "O.G."? Seriously. Wasn't there a time once when people with whack ass material used to get derided for being shallow and brainless? What happened? Where's the Gong these days? If people think that L'il Wayne is the greatest rapper in the world, then I really...well, I kinda pity them.
At any rate, what you'll find in my production may not be produced as well as Rick Rubin could produce it. It may not be as flashy as that Playboy Rap shit that comes out of people who have lost touch with the poverty and the anger which made them start rapping in the first place. It may not be coming from a huge name like Big muthaf'n Snoop Dogg. But I guarantee that the content I drop in my rhymes is always relevant, and has a real MESSAGE. Can we say the same for a lot of the crap coming out these days?
Feel free to stay in the "Cloughb" all night, Gentlemen. I, for one, won't miss you. I'm too busy dropping some REAL shit in my lyrics. ;)
Anyways, now that the shit-talking is done, I'll shut up and let you just, you know, listen to the music/poetry. Since that's probably why you came to this page in the first place. Enjoy. :)
