Listen:
This is one of those songs of which even a sophist cannot twist the meaning. So it seems to me, anyways. I can listen to this over and over, in any way I choose, and the message remains the same. This is a tune which speaks of Halcyon Days in a time that is passed.
You know what I mean? Those days when you were younger, and had less weight on your shoulders, when life was better, and you felt like it was easier to breathe? Those days are gone, and that might
account for the somewhat mournful, though heartbreakingly beautiful, chord progressions in this song.
I listen to this song, and naturally, I think back over times that are passed, and think about old victories, and old defeats, old triumphs, and old mistakes. Regrets? Yes. I've got more than enough regrets for a thousand lifetimes. Not that it matters, though. Regret is something that is necessarily of the domain of the past. And the past is never so important as the present or the future.
But it helps to think back, even if in such a bittersweet, melancholy mood, to those Halcyon Days when life was comparatively simple and tolerable. They might never be seen again, but at least they live on in memory, and so long as they are remembered, they never really did exist in vain...
Who knows. Maybe someone will eventually figure out how to recapture the Halcyon. Doubtful, but never is there anything in the universe that is impossible.
I love this piece. It is beautiful, plain and simple. I'm a huge fan of flutes, though, so I suppose it was inevitable that I would love this piece...Enjoy.
