This piece was made during the now almost legendary Tunisia and Egypt uprisings that made the beginning of 2011 so unforgettable. I was sitting here thinking of the things that I could do here in the middle of the Continent to help people of another continent in some way, shape, or form, while they were doing what I've only had the opportunity to talk about for years. I figured I could at least make some Truthaganda in support of their cause. So I did.
They were rebelling. Finally someone was again challenging the High Order of Complacency, of which most peoples had been at least nominally subject for decades. I have talked about this, for years, to anyone who would listen, and even quite a few who would not listen. And though it's very likely that not a single one of those heroes who rose in Revolution in Egypt knew me, or knew of my long catalog of Revolutionary production, but still they were playing out the messages in my hip-hop, my storytelling, my podcasting...the stuff that I had been talking about for years apparently occurred to them too, independently, and they were doing it. I still smile when I think of that.
I predicted the Egypt Uprising during the early stages of the Tunisia uprising, In late December 2010 into Early January, 2011. I also predicted that Yemen, Algeria, Libya and Jordan would also rise up in rebellion as a result of the unrest in Tunisia, and such a thing has also come to pass. Yemen's Revolution still continues, Algeria's Revolution, so far as I know, is still going as well. Jordan's has cooled down a bit. But Libya's...well, we know what's up with Libya, don't we?
I was going to end the commentary here, but there's something very important pertaining to this topic that I have to say. So here it is.
As of the time I'm writing this, Egypt's new Government, that was put into power following the Battle of Tahrir Square and the Egyptian Revolution, has passed a law making it illegal and punishable by a fine and jail time to Protest, under the provisions of the State of Emergency which currently exists in Egypt. This is a fundamental right of the human condition, this right to protest, and it is a right that a human being would be very, very wise to safeguard. Protest allows people to say no to tyranny, and that is a right which should NEVER be given up. For any reason.
So I have this to say to the People of Egypt. I love you. I am proud of what you have done. I am proud of what you have accomplished. You have proven my long-derided suppositions and theories about human potential and political/economic/social action to be correct. It IS possible to build the type of world that I envision, and you have proven that, if the energy, the willpower to build it can be sustained, it can indeed be built.
I'm not at all certain how to sustain the interest of an entire species yet. I'm still working on that part. :p
But what it is important to note, and this is VERY important, Egypt and Tunisia, and all else who would follow in the your path. If, now that you have won your country away from Mubarak, do you think that you will be any more secure under someone that acts just like him? If you accept the restrictions they put on your freedoms now, like taking away your right to protest, then do you think that you will easily win them back again? A right that is given up is not at all often retrieved.
If you think that because you caused the end of the Mubarak Regime, that somehow your Revolution is over, you are far from the truth there. The Revolution has to be maintained. Just about indefinitely, or guaranteed, you will provide pickings for the Vultures that dive to take everything you've got. You are in a VERY perilous situation, Egypt. I suggest that you not think that your Revolution is at all won yet. Because it isn't.
You've got a Military Junta in power now that has just taken away the right to do the very thing that put them in power. If you do not assert YOUR power, they will take it from you. Guaranteed.
That said, I hope that Egypt and Tunisia both make sure that they do not place themselves in a situation that is even worse than the one that they bravely overthrew at Tahrir Square. I love this piece. It's one of my favorite pieces that I've done. It may not be a masterpiece. I make no claim to be a Grandmaster Producer, but I do turn out, at the very least, some excellent Journeyman pieces, and this is probably one of them.
About the only criticism that I have for this piece is that it was difficult at times to get vocal levels to match up, because I used a vast number of tiny little clips from various news reports that were all recorded at different decibel levels, so sometimes the vocals are louder than in other parts. But still, this piece is pretty awesome, and I love it. I hope you do too.
