So last night, I was sitting here trying to think of ideas for content to put in my podcast, the Brookhaven Chronicles, since I'm planning on putting together a new season of the show. And I was scouring the tubes looking for audio and or video that might be useful in inspiring some production pieces. Well, lo and behold, I ran across some footage of the recent New York Gubernatorial Debate (held October 18th, if I'm not mistaken...)
More importantly, I was introduced for the first time to Jimmy McMillan and his "Rent Is Too Damn High" Party. To the left is a picture of Mr. McMillan, holding in his hands the average annual savings of probably most Americans.
And also, to the right, there's a picture of the famous Japanese warrior of the Sengoku Period, Yoshihiro Shimazu, brother to the Daimyo Yoshihisa Shimazu. (Albeit, this is Koei's interpretation of what Shimazu Yoshihiro looked like.) They kinda look similar, what with the wicked chops (up until a couple months ago, I sported a pair of those chops myself...) The striking appearance of this person hit me first. Soon after, McMillan's message hit me. The Rent Is Too Damn High. The fact that someone can and did name a party this, and run for Governor of New York, and actually was able to get into the Debate, is just nothing short of awesome in my opinion.
I agree with Jimmy McMillan. The Rent IS Too Damn High. And I'm not saying that to be a politically opportunistic tool like one of his opponents, a member of the Cuomo Political Dynasty...I actually agree with him on that subject. Everything costs too much. And the ones with all the money aren't the ones that need it.
Anyways, after watching Mr. McMillan's performance in the New York Gubernatorial Debate (I know, right? What's a South Dakotan watching a New York Gubernatorial Debate for, anyhow), I was left with the impression that Jimmy McMillan is no politician. I don't mean that as a bad thing. I mean that as a good thing. Yeah, I know...people are all like, "Career Politicians are the only ones who are fit to hold public office." That would seem to be logically sound, but the thing is, in a Plutocracy (and if you don't think you live in one, I have a duty to you as a fellow human being to inform you that you're only deluding yourself...), Politicians do not CARE whether their people are starving. Jimmy McMillan appears to have formed an entire persona around the plight of the impoverished. For that, if I were a New York citizen, I would VOTE for him. And if he weren't on the Ballot, I'd write him on the ballot and vote for him anyway. Because Compassion is a virtue, and indifference is not.
At any rate, I decided I'd get some audio of his remarks and put them into a Truthaganda Piece, so here I am. I hope you enjoy it. I find this one to be true and amusing and inspiring all at the same time, and I have a feeling that this one might end up going viral. It's well made, and even my vocals on the piece don't sound too bad...to me, anyways. Have a listen to Jimmy McMillan tell us about how high the Rent is, and enjoy. Thank you for listening.
